Calling the correct number when you need assistance is essential. If you have an emergency need for Police, Fire, or Medical Assistance, dial 911. The 911 dispatcher will ask for pertinent information to put into the computer for dispatching the appropriate personnel to your emergency. This line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you need to reach a particular Town of Manlius Police Officer you should call 315-682-2212 and request to speak with that officer. If the officer is not on duty at that time, you will be directed to their voicemail. If you call after hours, you can listen to a prerecorded message and follow the instructions to leave a voicemail in an officer's voicemail.

The safety of our youths is of great importance to us. If you cannot eliminate the problem at hand by contacting the parents of the youths, you should call us so that we can take appropriate action.

If you are stopped by a police officer, you should understand that the officer must take necessary steps to ensure his or her safety. If you are stopped:
- Pull as far over to the right side of the roadway as possible.
- Stay in your vehicle unless you are otherwise directed.
- Place your hands on the steering wheel in view of the officer.
- If it is dark, turn on your dome light.

The officer may ask for your driver license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. If these items are located in an unusual place, advise the officer of this prior to reaching for the item. The officer will state his or her reason for stopping you. You may disagree with the officer and are free to explain your reasoning, but you should not become confrontational with the officer.

The officer may issue you a traffic ticket which will contain information on you, the vehicle you were driving when you were stopped, the location of the alleged offense, and a date, time and location for a court appearance. If you wish to plead guilty to the offense, you may mail the traffic ticket to the returnable court listed on the ticket. If you believe that you are not guilty of the offense, you may explain this to the judge at your court date.

The number of drinks it takes to become legally intoxicated varies from person to person. Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is the percentage of alcohol in a person's bloodstream. In New York state, a person is legally intoxicated if their BAC is 0.08% or higher. The following contain the same percentage of alcohol:
- 12 ounces of beer at 5% alcohol content
- 5 ounces of wine at 12% alcohol content
- 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor at 40% alcohol
- 12 ounces wine cooler at 5% alcohol content

If you think someone may be missing, contact law enforcement immediately by dialing 911. It is a myth that you must wait 24 hours to report a missing person. Investigation regarding missing persons present a genuine challenge to law enforcement and quick reporting can help. The Manlius Police Department will investigate all persons reported missing until the person is found or has been determined to be a voluntary missing adult.

The New York State (NYS) Division of Criminal Justice Services is the state agency responsible for maintaining New York's sex offender registry which provides New Yorkers information about sex offenders living in their communities. The 3 levels of sex offenders are:
- Level 1 - Low risk of re-offense - offenders are required to register for a minimum of 20 years
- Level 2 - Medium risk of re-offense - offenders are required to register for life.
- Level 3 - High risk of re-offense - offenders are required to register for life.

Risk levels are determined by a judge after a court hearing. To learn if an individual is on the registry, including those whose risk levels are pending, can be obtained by calling 800-262-3257. (Sex offenders who finished serving their sentence prior to 1996 will not be on the registry as the law was not created until 1996). Callers must be able to provide the individuals name, and one of the following:
- An exact address
- Date of birth
- Driver license number
- Social security number

Town of Manlius Police Officers are committed to and have received extensive training in the standards of conduct by which they are expected to conduct themselves. If you feel that an officer exceeds these standards, you may submit a letter to the Chief of Police requesting that the officer be commended. Your letter of appreciation will be forwarded to the officer and a copy of the letter will be placed in the officers personnel file.

If you feel that an officer has conducted themselves in an inappropriate manner, you may report such actions to the Police Department by telephone or in written form. If you wish, you may remain anonymous. A supervisor will process the complaint, and the complaint will be fully investigated. If the complaint received is not anonymous, the complainant will be notified of the outcome within 30 business days.

If you are a victim of a crime that occurred within the Town of Manlius, you should report the crime as soon as possible by calling 911, or you may come into the Police Department to file a complaint. We do not take reports over the phone. If the crime occurred outside the Town of Manlius, you need to contact the police agency within that jurisdiction to report the crime.

When this Police Department receives your complaint, we will ask the particulars of the incident. In most cases, we will ask you to provide a supporting deposition so that we can proceed with criminal charges if an arrest is made. Your participation in the investigation is crucial and we will maintain contact with you throughout the investigation. If you discover information that may assist in the investigation, you should contact the Police Department immediately. If an arrest is made, we will forward a copy of all relevant reports to the Onondaga County Districts Attorneys Office and we will testify in court as required.

The DA's office is responsible for prosecuting the person(s) arrested for the crime and therefore would likely contact your for additional information. You may also contact the DA's office to determine the prosecutorial status of the arrest. Persons under the age of sixteen (juveniles) are handled by the County Attorney's office.

If you have experienced financial hardship as a result of a crime, you have several options for restitution:
- You may request restitution from the arrestee through the DA's office.
- You may commence a civil action against the arrestee.
- You may be eligible for assistance from the New York State Crime Victims Board.

If you are involved in an incident in which a police report was taken, you may request a copy of that report from the Town of Manlius Police Department. In some cases, certain reports or portions thereof are not available. If you call the records section at (315) 682-2212 they will be able to determine if the report is complete and if you are eligible to receive a copy. You may need to provide a written request for the report. Reports can not be faxed, but can be mailed if you provided a self addressed stamped envelope.
